3 copies architecture on Veeam VBR v12

Today I will share a scenario for Veeam VBR v12 and Dell Data Domain, refer to the details below.

Original Architecture

  • 1 x Veeam Backup and Replication v11 (virtual machine, management only)
  • 1 x Local Backup Repository
  • Copy 1 to Storage LUN
  • Copy 2 to existing Data Domain Appliances

Enhance the backup performance and data protection architecture

New Architecture

  • Data Center B is for new VM environment
  • Deploy a new Veeam Backup Replication v12 and new Backup Repository at Data Center B
  • Deploy a new Dell Data Domain at Data Center C
  • Upgraded the existing VBR to v12
  • Setup 2 partitions on all Data Domain appliances
  • Copy 1 to Storage LUN
  • Copy 2 to existing Data Domain Appliances
  • Copy 3 to new Data Domain from existing Data Domain

Benefits

  • It can deliver the new features on Veeam VBR v12
  • The backup flow of existing Veeam VBR and new VBR is separated
  • 3 data copies architecture
  • Data Domain (DD) supports the multi logical partition to share the total size, each DD have two logical partitions, one for existing Veeam VBR another one for new deployment
  • For Backup flow, the backup data will store on storage LUNr, then copy the backup from backup LUN to existing DD. Finally it replicates the data to new DD
  • It can provide the cyber resilient solution for Modern Data Center
