The architecture of SC storage with VMware ESXi host

With Live Volume, there are two SC storage can be used in a uniform configuration for an application that has extremely high uptime requirements. Typically these configurations are used within a datacenter where connectivity is sufficient for low latency to allow for synchronous replication to transfer data. For example, the datacenters are allocated into two different locations. With a uniform configuration, if an array were to experience an unplanned outage, the vSphere cluster still can access to the datastores without any interruption. For example, the application service doesn’t to be interrupted when three of four controllers are unavailable.

Now we will walk through the demonstration of creating a datastore (Live Volume) using the Dell Storage vSphere Web Client Plug-in. Choose the ESXi host and select “Add Data Storage Actions” -> “Add DataStore“.

Select Type of Datastore, “VMFS“, then Next.

Select the primary SC storage, then Next.

Select action type “Create New Dell Volume“, then Next.

Specific the volume name, its capacity and target folder, then Next.

Define your storage profile, then Next.

Define the snapshots if necessary, then Next.

Define the LUN number, then Next.

Select the file system type of Datastore. In this demo, please choose VMFS-6 since the ESXi is version 6. Then Next.

Specific the datastore name, then Next.

Keep the default replication setting, then Next.

Select the standby SC storage, then Next.

Select the replication type, “Live Volume, Synchronous – High Availability“, replication settings (1G or 10G) and replication target location. Then Next.

Define the live volume settings on target SC storage, and live volume secondary mapping, then Next.

Review the summary, then click “Finish” to confirm the creation of live volume .

The live volume is created successfully.

Finally, we can check the live volume information in Dell EMC Storage Manager Client. This demo is completed.
