VxRail 7.0 Cluster Update

In this post, we will discuss how to upgrade the VxRail software 7.0.100.xxxxxxx to 7.0.130.xxxxxxx

According to VxRail 7.0 release notes, VxRail 7.0.100 can direct upgrade to 7.0.13x

In upgrade procedure, it covers two areas: cluster readiness pre-check and cluster update workflow.

Environment: 3 x VxRail E560 Appliance (7.0.100.26719865)

Preparation: Download the VxRail 7.0.130.26845144 upgrade bundle package on Dell support website.

Now we can start to discuss the update workflow.

Remark: Please create a VM snapshot of VxRail Manager and vCenter Server VM before upgrading the VxRail cluster.

You will see the Summary tab for the VxRail-Virtual-SAN-Cluster. Navigate to the Configure tab.

Go to System under VxRail, we can see the running version of VxRail is 7.0.100.26719865.

The software update bundle has already been uploaded to VxRail Manager for a local update.

We must run a pre-check to determine whether this cluster is ready for an update.

On the Pre-Check Credentials, we must enter the VxRail Manager root, vCenter Server administrator, and vCenter Server root credentials. Click the Validate button for VxRail Manager to validate the credentials.

It will take a few minutes for the Pre-Check operation to complete.

Pre-check warnings are advisories that do not prevent a successful cluster update. Errors are issues that need to be corrected before initiating a cluster update. With this report, it gives you important information to schedule the maintenance window.

Now we can start the VxRail cluster upgrade.

We have the option to schedule the cluster update for a future date or have it run now.

Input the VxRail Manager root, vCenter Server administrator, and vCenter Server root credentials. Then click Next.

In Summary tab confirms the target VxRail version and the estimated minimum update time. Click Finish to initiate the cluster update.

Remark: The actual update time depends on the amount of data that needs to be resynchronized over the course of the update.

We can monitor the progress of the update on the Local Updates tab. The update will reboot the VxRail Manager and vCenter Server VM which will require you to log back in.

When VxRail update is successfully completed, we can see the version changed into 7.0.130.26845144 and the Dell logo is updated.

We learned about the value of VxRail-driven lifecycle management experience and the simplicity with which administrators can perform cluster updates.
