VxRail Deployment Options

VxRail is integrated with vCenter Server and relies on standard network services, including Domain Name Service (DNS) for operation. VxRail deployment options allow choice of how VxRail interacts with the vCenter Server, DNS, and vSphere distributed switch configuration in the customer environment. There are four VxRail deployment options available.

Embedded vCenter Server with external DNS
Embedded vCenter Server with internal DNS
Customer-supplied vCenter Server with external DNS
Customer-supplied vCenter Server with Customer-Supplied Virtual Distributed Switch (VDS)

Embedded vCenter Server with external DNS

This is the VxRail standard deployment option. In this configuration, VxRail hosts and VMs are configured into the customer DNS server host records. The VxRail deployed in VDS.

Embedded vCenter Server with internal DNS

This deployment option can be used where VxRail is installed in either dark or DMZ site. In this configuration, VxRail nodes and VM host records are configured into an internal DNS server that is installed on the VxRail Manager VM during VxRail initialization.

NOTE: The internal DNS option is only available when using an Embedded vCenter Server

Customer-supplied vCenter Server with external DNS

This deployment option allows a new VxRail cluster to be merged into the management system of an already existing VMware virtual infrastructure environment.

NOTE: An external DNS server is required when using a customer-supplied vCenter Server with VxRail.

Customer-supplied vCenter Server with Customer-Supplied Virtual Distributed Switch

Starting with VxRail 7.0.010, this deployment option is available that allows a single VDS to be created through existing vCenter Server instance. In sites with multiple VxRail clusters, the customer-supplied VDS spans across the VxRail clusters.

NOTE: An external DNS server is required when using a customer-supplied vCenter Server with VxRail.
