VMware vCenter 6.7 Appliance Upgrade

In this post we will let you know how to upgrade vCenter Appliance 6.5 to 6.7. According to VMware Product Interoperability Matrices, vCenter 6.5 can support to directly upgrade 6.7.

In this upgrade, we will upgrade a vCenter Server 6.5 Appliance (Embedded SSO). First we prepare the vCenter 6.7 appliance installer. We should create the VM snapshot for vCenter 6.5 before the version upgrade, then we can execute the installer to start the version upgrade.

Upgrade Sequence
1. Backup the source vCenter Server Appliance
2. Create a new vCenter Appliance with the temp IP address
3. copy the data from the source vCenter Server Appliance
4. Shut down the source vCenter Server Appliance
5. Import the data from the target vCenter Server

Click Next.

Accept the license agreement, next Next.

Connect the source vCenter Appliance, click “Connect To Source” button.

Input the information of source appliance and source host that manages the source appliance, then Next.

Input information of the target host, then Next.

Setup the target appliance virtual machine, then Next.

Select the deployment size, then Next.

Configure the temporary IP address for the target vCenter Server, then Next.

It starts to deploy a new vCenter Server Appliance when we click “Finish” button.

When the vCenter Server Appliance deploy successfully, it enters the upgrade stage 2 when we click “Continue” button.

Now it goes to the upgrade stage 2, then Next.

It connects to the source vCenter Server again.

Select the configuration data need to upgrade, then Next.

Next.

It starts to upgrade when we click “Finish” button.

The source vCenter will be shut down once the network configuration is enabled on destination vCenter Server.

It starts to copy the data from source vCenter Server to target vCenter Server.

It setup target vCenter Server and start services.

Finally it imports the copied data to target vCenter Server. After that the upgrade is completed successfully.

We can launch the vCenter Server Appliance Management homepage again.

We can see all status are in running health and the running version is 6.7.0.
