NetApp HCI – Storage Node Scale Out with NDE

In NetApp HCI system, you can scale out on Compute node, Storage node or both nodes. In this post, I will show how to scale out the storage node in NetApp HCI. Below is the environment diagram for this demonstration.

Before the storage expansion, the total cluster capacity is 1.72TB and cluster’s IOPS is 200,000.

Now I will scale out 1 x storage node into this configuration of NetApp HCI (2 x Compute Node + 4 x Storage Node). First you login into the NetApp Deployment Engine (NDE).

In welcome page, you will choose “Yes” and see the process for adding a compute node. Now we will add a compute node, select “No” and click “Continue“.

Select the new storage node and click “Continue“.

On the Network Settings, enter the these information and click “Continue“, Hostname , Management IP Address and Storage (iSCSI) IP Address.

On the Review page, click “Add Nodes”.

Then the storage node add into storage cluster, it may take a few minutes for processing.

Once the node added, go to NetApp Element Management. Now you can see the total cluster capacity changed to 2.15TB.

And cluster’s IOPS also increased to 250,000.
